What Soccer Can Teach Kids: Lessons That Go Beyond the Goal

A child can be thrilled to score a goal. But if you watch the whole game, you’ll see plenty of other moments worth celebrating: a pass to a teammate, a hand offered after a fall, or the courage to try another shot after missing the first.

That’s one reason soccer can be so good for kids. It gives them room to run and play, but also opportunities to practise working with others, handling disappointment, and feeling proud of their progress. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that children’s sports can help them make friends, play fair, and learn to be part of a team—especially when fun remains the focus.

1. Teamwork means noticing other people

A child with the ball has a choice: keep running or look up and pass. When they spot a teammate in a better position, they discover something important. Helping someone else succeed can be exciting too.

Teamwork isn’t only about the perfect pass. It’s calling out encouragement, taking turns, and recognising that everyone contributes to the game—including the child who made the save before the goal was scored.

Try asking: “Who helped make that goal happen?”

2. Sportsmanship matters when the game gets difficult

It’s easy to be cheerful when your team is winning. Soccer gives children a chance to practise kindness when things don’t go their way: accepting a referee’s decision, congratulating the other team, or checking on a player who has fallen.

Young children won’t get this right every time. That’s okay. A close game gives parents and coaches real moments to talk about fairness and respect. Praising effort and sportsmanship, rather than only the final score, helps keep the experience positive. That’s also the approach the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends.

Try asking: “What could you say to someone who missed a shot?”

3. A missed goal isn’t the end of the game

Every soccer player misses sometimes. The ball goes wide, a defender gets there first, or a goalkeeper makes a brilliant save. Then play continues.

For children, that can be a valuable lesson in trying again. They can feel disappointed without deciding they’re “bad at soccer.” With encouragement, they can get back into position, ask for another pass, and have another go.

The lesson isn’t that losing never hurts. It’s that one difficult moment doesn’t define the whole game—or the player.

Try asking: “What would you like to try differently next time?”

4. Practice helps children see their own progress

A child who once struggled to control the ball may eventually dribble around a cone. A pass that used to go astray begins to reach a teammate. These small improvements can feel enormous to the person who worked for them.

Soccer gives children something they can practise and notice: I can do more now than I could before. That sense of progress can build confidence without putting pressure on them to be the best player on the pitch.

Try asking: “What can you do with the ball now that felt tricky before?”

5. It’s an enjoyable way to get moving

Running towards a pass, changing direction, kicking, and playing in the park all get children moving. Regular physical activity supports children’s health, including their fitness and bone strength, according to the CDC.

But a game doesn’t need to feel like exercise. For many kids, the attraction is that they’re playing with friends or family. A relaxed kickabout can be just as welcome an invitation to move as an organised match.

6. Being part of the team can feel as good as scoring

Not every child wants to be the star striker. One might love making saves; another might be proud of a well-timed pass. Some children simply enjoy having teammates who are happy to see them arrive.

That sense of belonging is worth protecting. When adults make space for different abilities, celebrate helpful plays, and keep the game enjoyable, more children get to experience what they love about soccer.

A soccer story with your child at the centre

These are the moments that make a soccer story exciting: practising, cheering for a team, learning from another player, and daring to imagine what might happen next.

In I Win the Soccer World Cup!, your child practises soccer, is chosen as a ball kid, and gets the chance to train with a team captain. The story then takes a wonderfully imaginative turn: they step onto the pitch for the final, score the winning goal, and celebrate with the team.

Made for children aged 3–8, the book can be personalised with their name, a character representing them, the country they play for, and an optional dedication. It lets a young soccer fan enjoy the dream of a spectacular goal—while the rest of the story celebrates the practice, teamwork, and heart that came before it.
