15 Zoo Animals Kids Love: Fun Facts to Explore Together

“Which animal should we see first?”

That might be the hardest question at the start of a zoo day. There’s a map to unfold, a path to choose, and the possibility that something enormous—or tiny—will catch your child’s eye before you reach the first stop.

Animals give children plenty to wonder about. Why is that bird pink? How does a hippo see underwater? Is a rhino’s horn like a unicorn’s? Here are 15 animals to get the conversation started.

1. Elephants: The splash-makers

An elephant’s trunk works as a nose, an upper lip, and an extraordinarily useful tool. It can lift a heavy branch but also pick up something as delicate as a single straw. Elephants use their trunks to touch, gather food, and bring water to their mouths. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

If two elephants were splashing each other, would your child join in—or move well out of range?

2. Hippos: Eyes above the water

A hippo can stay mostly submerged while its eyes, ears, and nostrils remain above the surface. Those features sit high on its head, helping it see, hear, and breathe from the water. Hippos can also close their nostrils when they go under. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

Look at a picture together: how much of the hippo can your child see?

3. Flamingos: Pink from their food

Flamingos aren’t born bright pink. Pigments in the algae and small crustaceans they eat help give them their pink or reddish feathers. Their long legs let them wade through shallow water while they search for food. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

Standing on one leg beside a flamingo looks easy—until you try it.

4. Crocodiles: A mouthful of teeth

A crocodile’s teeth don’t have to last its whole life. Like other crocodilians, it can grow replacements as older teeth wear out or are lost. Crocodiles also have sensitive organs that help them detect movement in the water. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

That’s a good animal to admire from a comfortable distance.

5. Giraffes: A tongue made for reaching

Giraffes use their long tongues and flexible lips to reach leaves, even around thorny branches. Their tongues are dark rather than pink, and researchers think that color may help protect them from the sun during all that browsing. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

Ask your child what they would reach for if they were giraffe-tall.

6. Lions: The roar you could hear far away

A lion resting in the shade might look sleepy and quiet. Its roar is another matter: under the right conditions, it can be heard from miles away. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

Can your child make a lion’s roar? You might want to ask when you’re not in a quiet reading corner.

7. Rhinos: A surprising horn

A rhino’s horn looks formidable, but it’s made of keratin—the same material found in our hair and fingernails. Different rhino species also have different mouths suited to the plants they eat. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

The next time your child looks at their fingernails, they’ll have a rather large animal to think about.

8. Monkeys: Not every tail is the same

Some monkeys, including spider monkeys, can grip branches with their tails. Other monkeys cannot, and some species have no tail at all. “Monkey” covers a great variety of animals, each with its own way of moving through the world. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

What would be more fun: swinging through branches or watching the monkeys from below?

9. Zebras: Stripes all their own

Look closely at a group of zebras and you’ll find that their stripe patterns aren’t identical. Researchers can use those individual patterns to tell zebras apart. Zebras also belong to the horse family. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

Invite your child to draw two zebras with different stripes. Can they still recognize each one later?

10. Kangaroos: Built to hop

Kangaroos have powerful hind legs and long tails that help them balance as they move. Larger kangaroos can cover more than seven metres in a single hop when travelling at speed. Their babies, called joeys, develop in their mothers’ pouches. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

A few little hops are enough to discover how much work those legs do.

11. Camels: What’s in a hump?

A camel’s hump doesn’t store water. It stores fat that the animal can draw on when food is scarce. That’s one of several adaptations that help camels manage life in dry places. (Smithsonian’s National Zoo.)

It’s a good reminder that an animal’s most noticeable feature may have a surprising purpose.

12. Gorillas: More than a chest beat

A gorilla’s chest beat makes a striking sound, but gorillas have complex family lives beyond that famous display. Young gorillas learn through play and by watching others in their group. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

What do children learn by watching the grown-ups in their family?

13. Pandas: Bamboo, bamboo, and more bamboo

Giant pandas spend many hours eating bamboo. They grip the stalks with help from an enlarged wrist bone that functions a little like a thumb. Although they’re bears, bamboo makes up most of their diet. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

Ask your child: what food would you choose if you had to eat it for most of the day?

14. Seals: Whiskers that sense movement

A seal’s whiskers do more than tickle. They can detect subtle movement in water, helping the seal explore and find food. Seals, sea lions, and walruses all belong to a group of marine mammals called pinnipeds. (Smithsonian Ocean.)

Imagine finding your way underwater by feeling the water move.

15. Penguins: Birds that love to swim

Penguins may be famous for waddling, but they’re impressive in the water. And not every penguin lives among snow and ice: African penguins live along the coast of southern Africa, where they swim to catch food. (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.)

Would your child rather try a penguin waddle or a penguin belly-slide?
